SUBJECT:       NEW GENERAL EDUCATION CODING IN SIS

Date:             August 2008

Between 2004 and 2008, the Curriculum Committee revised and renamed some of the College’s general education requirements.  Beginning now and continuing until 2011, two curricula will be in effect, one for students entering prior to 2008 and the other for students entering in 2008 or after.

The 2008-2009 edition of the St. Olaf Academic Catalog, available at http://www.stolaf.edu/offices/registrar/acadres.html provides more details.
See “Comprehensive Requirements (General Education) Requirements for B.A. Candidates (http://www.stolaf.edu/catalog/0809/gradrequirements/comprehensive-requirements.html).

The SIS shows the two curricula as follows:

All student information to which you have access (e.g., advisee information, major/concentrator information for chairs/directors) reflects the appropriate curriculum for that student.  For example, the degree audit is coded according to the student’s year of matriculation.

The GE attributes for all courses are visible to you as a faculty member on the Class & Lab tab.  For attributes that have changed, you will see both the ’94 version and the ’08 version of the GE attribute.  For example, Biology 125 is coded for NSC and NSL (’94) and for IST and SED (’08).*

Your students, however, will see only the GE attributes that pertain to them on the Class & Lab Schedule.  For example, for Biology 125, a sophomore will see only NSC and NSL; an incoming student (transfer or new first-year student) will see only IST and SED.

Remember: In the St. Olaf Academic Catalog, the course descriptions do not show the GE attributes at all.  Refer to the Class & Lab Schedule.

*A side note: remember that NSC is our three-letter coding for NST-Core (which combines NST-B, -C, -P: 1 course required in Biology or Chemistry or Physics.
