Purpose of Procedures:
To ensure tuition, room, and board are refunded appropriately to the students account in the event of a withdrawal from St. Olaf College.

Who needs to know these Procedures:
All St. Olaf College students.

Procedures:
Tuition, room, and board will be refunded based on a pro-rated scale between week 1 and week 5. No refunds are given for tuition after week 5. Room and board are pro-rated based on the number of weeks enrolled. Students who withdraw for medical reasons may receive a pro-rated refund of tuition throughout the semester.

Students must notify the Dean of Students (DOS) Office regarding any withdrawal from St. Olaf. The DOS will then contact the appropriate offices. The following is a breakdown of how tuition is pro-rated.

  1. One week or less: 90% refund
  2. Two weeks or less: 80% refund
  3. Three weeks or less: 60% refund
  4. Four weeks or less: 40% refund
  5. Five weeks or less: 20% refund
  6. Over five weeks: No refund

If it is determined that a student should receive a tuition refund after week 5 due to medical reasons, the following formula is used to determine the amount of the refund.  The Dean of Students Office will determine whether the withdrawal is for medical reasons or not.

  1. Current week of semester / 15 = x %
  2. Tuition for semester * x % = y (amount owed for semester)
  3. Tuition for semester – y = amount refunded

Room and board are also pro-rated using this formula.
