Life of Pi by: Yann Martel
review by: Sam Tosteson '08
The Life of Pi is an engaging story about a
young Indian boy who is stranded in a lifeboat when his ocean liner sinks. The
book is separated into two distinct parts. The first describes his life in Pondicherry before the
ship sinks. One of the most interesting things this section has to offer is an
account of how Pi, the main character, becomes a Hindu, Christian, and Muslim
contemporaneously and without contradiction. The second section deals with how
Pi reacts to the characters he is stranded with in the lifeboat. Without going
into too much detail, let me just say that I was continuously surprised and
inspired by the emotional and psychological depth of what the author has to
say. This is so much more than just a survival-in-the-face-of-adversity hero
tale.
