Green Machines
Green Machine Bicycle Program
The Green Machine Bicycle Program recycles used and discarded bikes for use by students living on campus. The goal of the program is to cut down on unnecessary car use for short trips across college grounds and into Northfield. The Green Machine Program is similar to traditional "Yellow Bike" projects, but has been altered in an effort to thwart vandalism and theft, as well as prevent unsafe bikes from being used. Our bikes are stationed locked to dormitory bike racks, and at the time of check-out, keys to the locks as well as helmets will be provided to riders to ensure their personal safety as well as the security of the bike.
The original concepts for this project were brainstormed and developed over the course of the 2004-2005 academic year, while efforts so far have been focused on establishing the fleet and getting the program rolling. We are still in need of donated bicycles, locks with keys, bike parts, helmets, general funding, and bike tools for repairs. Basic repair tools includes bike pumps, tire levers, patch kits, hex sets, chain lubricant, and various sized wrenches. If you have any questions about the program for 2009-2010 or would like to make a donation, please contact Daniel Novak (novakd@stolaf.edu). Thank you very much.
Join us to work on bikes Saturday afternoons from 1-4pm in the Green Bike Garage (basement of Ytterboe).
