Committees
The
Environmental Coalition's work is divided among several committees.
This page outlines some of the ideas and plans for each committee.
Earth Month Planning
April is host of Earth Month/Week/Day and as the St. Olaf Environmental Coalition our plan making is in full swing! We need your help getting everything coordinated and arranged.
- Possible ideas so far: Presentations at corridor meetings concerning environmental awareness.
- Tabling outside the cafeteria.
- Farmers market and/or local organization tabling.
- Showing movies/documentaries.
- Environmental justice themed.
- Big name speaker(s).
- Some coordination with CEL and Entrepreneur week.
First-Year Education Committee
The
First-Year Education Committee is working to provide prospective
students with more information about St. Olaf's environmental practices
and to encourage conservation and recycling once new students arrive on
campus. Contact: Lauren (andersol@stolaf.edu).
- Current Project: Presentations at corridor meetings concerning environmental awareness.
- Informational materials for first-years during week one, possibly a video and/or flyers
- Market the college as an environmentally-minded school
- Encourage conservation and recycling practices within the dorms
- Encourage the purchase of "blue-star" environmentally friendly products for dorm rooms
Education and Community Outreach Committee
The
Education Committee's main goal is to increase awareness about
environmental issues on campus and in the city of Northfield. We work
to bring speakers to campus, write articles for newspapers, and
distribute educational posters and flyers. Contact: Deanna
(steeged@stolaf.edu).
- Write informational articles in the Manitou Messenger, possibly establish a weekly eco-column
- Advertise the JustFood Coop on campus
- Prepare and distribute caf flyers to educate students about environmental issues on campus
- Bring speakers about environmental issues to St. Olaf
- Work with kids in Northfield
- Other forms of community outreach
The Fun Committee
The Fun Committee works to set up social events for members of the Environmental Coalition.
- First event: a camping trip on October 16!
- More to come...
Recycling Committee
The
Recycling Committee is looking into ways to increase the amount of
recycling that happens on the St. Olaf campus, whether it be in the
dorms or in Stav Hall. Contact: Nali Prchal (prchal@stolaf.edu).
- Remove paper bags from the bag lunch line; replace with reusable canvas bags
- Find out who is in charge of recycling on campus in order to better promote recycling overall
- Provide in-room recycling bins, possibly as a fundraiser
