Finding a voice in the Emerald Isle
Contributing Writer Friday, February 16, 2001 Traveling to Ireland this January was an amazing experience. There was so much to see and even more to learn. We had an excellent group (led by Jim Tallon) of twenty-six Oles who were excited to learn and have a good time, which is exactly what we did. We traveled to five places in Ireland: Galway, Killala, Inch Island, Derry, and Dublin. We also made some day trips to the Ceide Fields, Giant's Causeway, and the city of Belfast. Although we all traveled to the same places and shared the same experiences, we all took something different away from it. Certain experiences are more vivid than others to each of us. What follows is one of my most memorable experiences... Ode to Inch Island Mountainous regions surrounded by rolling green hills Beautiful scenery with tons of thrills Our home away from home at Mrs. Greene's Sheep grazing the land, providing brilliant scenes. The food was amazing, the rooms fantastic too The horseback riding and island tours provided lots to do But it was Mrs. Greene who made this experience carry its meaning I was sure sometimes that I was dreaming. An afternoon climb up a nearby mountain The strong wind and chilly air, our noses running like a fountain Missing the beaten path can make for a long climb Breathtaking views from the top make it worth all of the time. The sun setting and film running low What a magnificent place, and no snow! The journey back to Mrs. Greene's is to follow A new adventure comes tomorrow. ~Jodie Beilfuss |
