Guthrie Theater Release

Friday, February 23, 2001

The Walker Art Center and Guthrie Theater present the Foundry Theateršs Obie Award-winning Gertrude and Alice: A Likeness to Loving for two weeks only beginning Tuesday, March 6 and playing through March 18 at the Guthrie Lab, 700 North First Street.

Staged by internationallly celebrated director Anne Bogart, A Likeness to Loving stars its creators, award-winning actress Lola Pashalinski as Gertrude Stein and Linda Chapman as Alice B. Toklas.

Gertrude and Alice: A Likeness to Loving is a mellifluous, touching and often hilarious journey through the unparalleled lives and times of these thoroughly modern women.

Gertrude Stein was an American original: ex-patriot, pioneer modernist writer, art collector, salonniere, friend and mentor to painters and writers of renown; Alice Babette Toklas: wife, lover, friend, secretary, housekeeper, gardener, publisher and finally, perpetuator of Gertrudešs artistic legacy. Bold in their persons, they lived lives without apology.

Winner of the 1999-00 Obie Award, A Likeness to Loving pairs its creators Pashalinski and Chapman with internationally celebrated director Anne Bogart in a production the New York Times hails as "Beautifully conceived! Perhaps the most intimate look yet at a friendship that was both sensual and tempestuous!"

Beginning March 6 and playing through March 18, the play will be performed Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. with matinee performances on March 10, 17 and 18 at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday evening, March 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $23-$30 and are available by calling the Walker Art Center at 612-375-7622 or the Guthrie Theater Box Office at 612-377-2224 or toll-free 1-877-44-STAGE. Tickets may also be purchased on the web at www.walkerart.org/tickets/ or www.guthrietheater.org. Guthrie Theater
