"Striving for Peace: Crossing Borders, Challenging Boundaries" is the theme of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize Forum to be held March 9-10 at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. This year's Forum honors the 1999 Nobel laureate Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Morten Rostrup, the international president of MSF, is the opening plenary speaker on Friday afternoon.

Luther College coordinators have scheduled 46 seminar sessions on Saturday, all dealing with an aspect of crossing physical, social, spiritual or psychological boundaries. Two of the seminar offerings are from St. Olaf. Students who were on the Biology in South India program last fall will share insights gained from their independent research on ecological and health-related projects in that region, in a seminar titled "Ecological Health and Community Health Challenges in South India." Charles Taliaferro of the Philosophy department and Rebecca Judge of the Economics department, will present a seminar entitled "Natural and Unnatural Boundaries: Balancing Geography, Economics, and Politics," which considers different types of barriers to environmental sustainability.

Registration deadline for the Forum is Monday, February 26. The registration fee of $20 for St. Olaf students, faculty, and staff includes all sessions, bus transportation to Decorah, housing (with Luther hosts), and most meals. The fee to the general public is $35, which includes all sessions and Saturday lunch. Forum brochures are available in the PO box area of the Commons, the Commons administrative office, or by request from Susan Carlson in the Center for Integrative Studies, Holland 513, carlsons@stolaf.edu. Registrations can be dropped in campus mail or put in the CIS/CILA P.O. box (under Academic Programs).
