Menšs Hockey swept out of season
Staff Writer Friday, February 23, 2001 The St. Olaf men's hockey team looked to send off their six graduating seniors this past weekend with a pair of wins against Saint John's University. Unfortunately, the Oles came up just short, losing 4-2 on Friday night in Northfield and 5-3 on Saturday night in St. Cloud. Friday night's game was the final home game of the season for the Oles. They wasted no time getting on the board as senior Jeff Simison ripped a wrist shot in from the slot just 37 seconds into the game. The Oles held off a huge surge by the Johnnies as first-year goaltender Garret Hasti stopped 21 shots in the first period and the Oles took a 1-0 lead into the locker room. First-year forward Wally Cisewski scored at 12:59 into the second period to give the Oles a 2-0 lead, but the Johnnies answered back just four minutes later to cut the lead down to 2-1. St. John's opened the scoring just 1:29 into the third period to tie the game and the Johnnies took the lead for good with an even strength goal at 10:45. St. John's added an empty netter with six seconds left to seal their victory. Hasti stopped 44 of 47 shots in the loss for the Oles. On Saturday, the Oles hoped to end the season on a positive note, but things quickly changed as St. John's scored just 9 seconds into the game. St. John's would add a goal at the 5:35 mark of the period to give them a 2-0 lead. Things looked bad for the Oles. However, first-year forward Aaron Opheim buried a rebound at 10:30 of the first period, and the Oles were right back in the game. In the second period, senior Adam Will tied the game up for the Oles with another rebound goal. St. John's would take the lead just two minutes later, but Simison added a power play goal at 15:06 of the second period to tie the game once more. St. John's would add their own power play at 17:25 to take the lead for good. St. John's added another goal in the third period to seal a 5-3 victory for the Johnnies. Hasti stopped 29 of 34 shots in a losing effort for St. Olaf. St. Olaf finished the season with an 8-16-1 record (4-11-1 MIAC). The players and coaches would like to thank all the fans and the St. Olaf community for their attendance and support this season, as they look forward to next season. |
