One of the best-ever romantic comedies is 1934's It Happened One Night. The story follows a reporter (Clark Gable) who comes across a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert), who has abandoned her husband-to-be and must hide from the press.

The two accompany each other on long bus-rides and hotel stays to keep her hidden from reporters. They naturally fall in love, but both question each other's motives. There are many memorable scenes, including the bus, hitchhiking, and the references to "the walls of Jericho."

The film was ahead of its time with a plot that would still hold up today. It was the first film that won the big five Oscars: best picture, director (Frank Capra), actor (Gable), actress (Colbert) and screenplay.

Oddly, none of the actors involved wanted to make the film, and Colbert even told people after it was completed that it was the worst film she'd ever done. Luckily, she was wrong, and the film was deservedly listed by the American Film Institute as one of the best films of all time.
