Garage sale to raise money for Mexican orphanage

On Friday, May 4, between noon and 4 p.m., Buntrock Plaza will be occupied by a one-of-a-kind garage sale.

No, this garage sale is not merely an attempt at spring cleaning. All profits collected from the event will go to benefit Rancho de Sus Ninos, a non-profit orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico.

When asked about the development of the garage sale, the event's organizer, Heather Scheiwe said, "I have no idea how it got this big. We started really small, just thinking about Ellingson, and it just expanded on its own."

Through the May 4, students are encouraged to take any items they no longer need, from socks to C.D.s, to collection boxes located in Ytterboe, Kildahl, Rand, Mellby, Larson, Ellingson, or Boe Chapel.

Scheiwe, who volunteered at Rancho de Sus Ninos last summer, saw a garage sale as an easy way to help what she feels is a valuable organization. "They're always in need of funds," she said.

On the importance of Rancho de Sus Ninos, and in explanation of exactly where all the profits from the garage sale will be going, Scheiwe said, "[The children] have the opportunity to live in a home setting, are given clothes, and eat three meals a day. There is a school they can go to as well."

"Orphanages in Mexico are different because most of the children have at least one parent; the parent just can't raise them. [Rancho de Sus Ninos] has also set up things such as a day care center."
