Opinions Bipolarity By Katie Audette Student Columnist My, there certainly were a lot of things going on this past weekend! Ever since the fancy-schmancy gold-embossed invitations appeared in our mailboxes a few weeks ago, Iıve been preparing myself for what might happen, developing a strategy to capitalize on the good day sunshine fun agenda and still maintain my sanity with regards to my homework. I knew right away it was going to be tough to accomplish such a feat. more... Bush flunks as the people's president By John Farrell Contributing Writer I think Iıve had enough "strategery" for this presidential term. From solving the energy crisis by drilling more oil to pushing a corporate agenda in labor disputes, our new administration is lacking something. Democracy, literally "rule of the people," would imply that our government should act in our best interests and not commercial ones. Bush might not be alone as a corporate representative in Washington, but he is clearly not the peopleıs president (if skeptical, refer to popular vote). more... Figurehead Bush eroding country By Caleb Kasper Contributing Writer George W. Bush, what a joke and disgrace to our country. It would almost be laughable if it werenıt so goddamn depressing. Bushıs first 100 days, although littered with "good" works, such as saving our spies from the reds and recognizing concerns with free trade while in Canada, have been infuriating for the majority of people who neither voted for the republicrats nor their corporate sponsors (62 corporations "donated" at least $100,000 to both campaigns). Bush has appointed a cabinet of ex-corporate CEOs to regulate the very industries where they were once employed (and still are through bribery in the form of campaign contributions and, well, bribery). more... First hundred days in office, not beating around the bush By Eric Hoplin State Chairman Minnesota College Republicans As President Bush clears the traditional 100-day mark, Americans are viewing the President with increasingly high ratings. According to a recent Gallup poll, President Bushıs overall approval rating is 62%. Compare this to Bill Clintonıs rating of 55% at his 100-day mark. Pundits on both sides of the aisle agree that the presidentıs impressively high approval ratings can be directly attributed to his compassionate conservative agenda. more... Letter to the Editors By Kate Hennig Contributing Writer I would like to thank you for the feature section titled "Faith, Religion, and Education" in the April 13 issue of the Messenger. The authors of the articles discussed many pertinent topics tracing the history of St. Olaf as a college of the church. However, I noticed that a few of St. Olafıs religious student organizations were not mentioned in the box on page 7, and Iıd like to address them. more... May your days be full By James Proescholdt Opinions Editor May brings with it many associations for Americans. Younger citizens often think about the end of school, bringing with it graduations, open houses and parties. Others (mostly Minnesotans, of course) connote the month with spring finally finding permanence as it rapidly turns into summer. Still more think about correct posture. more... |
