What is there to do in Northfield?
Copy Editor Friday, September 22, 2000 What is there to do in Northfield? It may be a small town, but Northfield has some cool stuff to do when you just need to get off campus. Try walking along the Canon river or Division street, or check out a few of the following places. RESTAURANTS: The newest restaurant in town is The Froggy Bottom. Go check it out. J. Grundy's Reub'N Stein: Great burgers and sandwiches. Game room and live music. Contented Cow: British Food. Smoke-free; Live acoustic guitar, rock, blues and folk music; outside patio. Shows start at 8:00 PM. Hogan Brothers: Excellent hoagies and soup. Live music, mostly acoustic guitar. Shows are free and start at 8:00 PM. The Tavern: Food tastes home-made; live music in the upstairs lounge; Sunday 8-11 open stage. Byzantine Cafe: Food from the Mediterranean, Northern India, Greece and America. Try the Turkish coffee and the desserts! Ole Store: You mean you haven't had an ole roll yet? The food is definitely worth the walk down St. Olaf Ave. Bagel Brothers: As the name suggests, they have really good bagels and bagel sandwiches. Chapatis: Wonderful authentic Indian food; good vegetarian selection. Restaurante Las Delicias: Very good Guatemalan-style food, located in the old Ideal Cafe. Mandarin Garden: Good chinese food; nice, quiet atmosphere. COFFEE SHOPS: Blue Monday: Always packed with colllege students, profs, and people from Northfield. A good place to meet interesting people. The Grind: Two rooms--one is smoke-free; video games; great place to study or read. Quality Bakery and Coffee Shop: The cookies look almost too good to eat. Hattie's Fine Coffee and Tea: Try the pie; located in the Archer House. Cocoa Bean: Specialty coffee and tea, as well as ice-cream, malts, and fudge. SHOPPING: You will find specialty shops all over Northfield with everything from beads and jewelry to clothes to art and office supplies to books and music. Interesting gift stores abound. Spend some time in the used book stores, there are some incredible finds. HISTORY AND ART: Northfield Historical Society and Museum: $4, 1:00-4:00 PM Sunday; 10:00-4:00 PM Tuesday-Saturday. Northfield Arts Guild: Art Gallery 10:00-5:00 PM Monday-Saturday. Offers classes, theater productions, and art shows. MOVIES: Southgate CinemaThree screens, current releases, $3 matiness, $5 night shows; also has video rentals. OUTDOORS: Go to a park, one of the golf clubs, or pick apples at the Fireside Orchard. Consider tubing or canoeing down the river. Go to Jesse James Days in September and the Festival of Trees in December. |
