55057.com unites Carleton and Olaf on the Web
Staff Writer Friday, September 29, 2000 This year there is an alternative webpage that tells a St. Olaf student almost everything you generally looked on the St. Olaf page for and more. 55057.com is a new web site for St. Olaf and Carleton students that provides more of the information that students really want to know. "We just basically thought, ÔWhat would we like to know?Ő and thatŐs what we put on the site," said one of the siteŐs creators, Chris Hanson. "We looked at St. OlafŐs web site and thought, ThatŐs not really useful to students", said Dave Marotz, the other creator of the site. 55057.com has many useful features such as events happening on campus, movie times, whatŐs being served in the dining hall, weather and much more. The site can also be used as a search engine and to log into emissary, hotmail.com or yahoo.com. Students can interact with the site as well by posting their own events and placing classified ads. Everything on the site is free and the only money they make is on ads, which goes entirely towards their costs. Amy Morrison does all the signs and ads. The main feature that most students find they like about this site over the St. Olaf site is that almost everything is one click away, they donŐt have to dig around for anything. "I hate the new St. Olaf web site," said junior Kurtis Parlin, "It took me 20 minutes to find my transcript." PAC also posts its information and events on the site. They are hoping that more people will start to post things on the site and that will cause them to get more users. They currently have about 400 people looking at the site each day. " People donŐt post things because they donŐt think there are enough users, but if there was more posted there would be more users," said Hanson. Most postings are reviewed before going onto the site, and it is a great place to advertise any event that groups are having or wanting students to get involved with. Anyone interested in helping with the site should email Chris@55057.com. |
