St. Olaf joins in the fight against breast cancer
Contributing Writer Friday, October 13, 2000 October 2000 marks the 15th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). NBCAM is sponsored by groups such as the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. NBCAM is designed to advocate the fact that early detection of breast cancer saves lives. While there is no established means of breast cancer prevention, detecting it early increases chances of survival. According to the ACS, approximately 182,800 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,800 will die from this illness each year. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Because of these devastating numbers, NBCAM encourages women to make a commitment to early detection by performing regular breast self-exams as well as getting yearly mammograms after the age of 40. Mammography, the most comprehensive method of breast cancer detection, can prevent thousands of breast cancer deaths each year. October 20 has been designated as National Mammography Day. The St. Olaf community has joined in the fight against breast cancer by promoting NBCAM and fostering awareness. On Oct. 26, Christina Moses, St. Olaf senior and women's health peer educator, will be giving a seminar on breast cancer. "Be Aware for the B-Rest of Your Life" will take place at 7 p.m. at the Thompson House on St. Olaf Avenue. Moses will be speaking about the risk factors as well as preventative measures of breast cancer. |
