Classic Movie Pic of the week
Arts & Lifestyle Editor Friday, October 27, 2000 Looking for something creepy to watch for Halloween? Why not abandon the Scream franchise and try some good old-fashioned suspense? A sleek but little-known chiller is 1967's Wait Until Dark, which stars Audrey Hepburn in an Oscar-nominated role. Based on Frederick Knott's hit Broadway play, the film stars Hepburn as Susy, a blind housewife who inadvertently gets ahold of a doll filled with heroin. Unfortunately for her, a psycho (a very slimy Alan Arkin) and his henchman will do anything to get it. The film is a bit stagy (virtually the entire movie takes place in Hepburn's apartment) but that seems to only add to the suspense. The climax is particularly chilling. The final showdown between Arkin and Hepburn will make you jumpat least once. Director Terence Young adds much to the dark and gloomy atmosphere of the film (including hiring Henry Mancini to write a great score). The performances are memorable too: Richard Crenna is likeable as the good-hearted henchman and Arkin is quite impressive in a flashy role. But the movie belongs to Hepburn, who could elevate any movie with her sweetness and charm. |
