Letters to the Editor: Concern over Co-op bus
Friday, October 27, 2000 The Cities Co-op bus provides a wonderful service for St. Olaf students who want to get off campus for events. I¹ve enjoyed using the bus before, but I am disappointed in the service this year. The bus is frequently late; making it difficult to plan Cities trips‹as well as making them nerve racking. After 40 minutes outside waiting, other students and I were worried. Also, the bus¹ route is not as useful as it could be. Every rider has different preferences and the Co-op bus strives to meet many of these. However, not stopping at the University of Minnesota seems illogical, given that we might use the libraries for research. The bus takes almost two hours to reach downtown Minneapolis‹usually a 45 minute drive. Perhaps there could be an express bus once a day to downtown. The last bus leaves downtown at 12:22 AM; given that many places close much earlier, that seems extremely late. Since there is an easy way for students to get from the airport to the Mall of America, the Mall stop seems unnecessary. With traffic and Minnesota weather, some lateness should be expected‹but there should be a system to let student riders know about this. I know other students are also upset about the bus service this year. Perhaps a meeting with bus drivers, students, and staff would be effective Or maybe some meaningful, ongoing dialogue between bus riders and student activities staff about the bus service would be useful. I urge those with ideas to share them. Since we as students ride the bus, it should be as responsive as possible to our needs. |
