This year's fall concert featured the musical talent of DJ MUSAB along with rap sensation Busta Rhymes on Saturday in Skoglund Auditorium.

The concert was co-sponsored by St. Olaf College and Carleton College, and brought in fans from all over the area.

From the time the Student Activities Committee (SAC) announced Busta's visit, emotions on campus were mixed. Rhymes' background and reputation brought debate concerning the kinds of guest artists St. Olaf should bring. His rocky history caused heated discussions throughout campus. For many, this was a catalyst to attend the concert and see what the hype was all about.

Once MUSAB, a rapper and DJ from the Twin Cities area, entered Skoglund, his music filled the gym for an hour and a half. In between sets, MUSAB spoke out promoting racial understanding. MUSAB displayed his talent and was able to elicit cheers from the crowd with his dance-provoking rhythms.

After MUSAB finished, there was a break while the crowd got ready for Busta to appear. Before the concert started, Kristen Gore, who spoke with Bill Bradley and other prominent democrats at a political rally earlier in the night, paid a surprise visit trying to get the message out once more on the importance of voting in the upcoming election. Concertgoers acted rudely yelling and screaming, waiting impatiently for Busta to appear, so her message went largely unheard.

Twenty minutes later Busta Rhymes appeared wearing a bright yellow jumpsuit. He immediately began his act with high energy and never let up. Busta was able to get the crowd involved dancing to the beat. He performed various songs from old records and included new selections from his most recent album Anarchy.

On the floor, the concert was packed. It was hard to comprehend the words of his songs because of the distortion, but the crowd clearly enjoyed themselves. Busta seemed to be trying to put on a great show, but fell flat in regards to his conversations and actions in between sets.

Throughout the concert, Rhymes felt it necessary to discuss his views on sex and drugs. He spoke blatantly detailing crude sexual escapades and demonstrated many vulgar acts. Many members of the crowd were upset by his brash behavior, while others clearly enjoyed the music and atmosphere that Busta created.

The concert ended without an encore by Busta. Although several felt Rhymes' actions and words were distasteful, many were able to ignore that and enjoy the concert. The appearance of Busta Rhymes presented a non-traditional St. Olaf experience, for some a refreshing change but for others a controversial debate.
