Classic Movie Pic of the week
Friday, November 10, 2000 If you want reliable old comedy, take a look at 1959's Some Like it Hot. It stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as two musicians who witness the St. Valentine's Day massacre and join an all-girls band heading to Miami to hide from their pursuers. Director Billy Wilder was one of the great comic directors, and this may well be one of his best films. The film also boasts another invaluable asset: Marilyn Monroe. She plays Sugar Kane, the wild singer of the band who falls in love with Curtis. The film is at its best while the men are in drag, particularly Jack Lemmon, who earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination for the part. Watch for the classic scene in which he does the tango with a rich admirer (Joe E. Brown). Filled with hilarious performances, the film is sure to make you laugh until you cry. No wonder it was named the funniest comedy of all time by the American Film Institute. |
