Residence halls will present movies in lounges
Staff Writer Friday, November 10, 2000 On Thursday, Nov. 2, the student senate passed a legislation called the "Capital Improvements Bill" in the attempt to, among other things, provide money to wire the residence hall lounge televisions for playing movies from a central location. such as the SAC office. St. Olaf currently spends $11,600 each year for films to get licenses to show them in a commercial environment. The administrators of these movies have found that, in many cases, they only have the time to show each film in Viking Theatre once. At a cost of $116 per movie, many students and senators alike feel that the school is not getting their money's worth from the current cinema situation. Combined with the relatively small number of people that watch the movies, these issues provided the fuel necessary for senate's latest decision. The Student Activities Committee (SAC) is working on finding a way to get more use out of the movies that we already have. Beginning this week, SAC will be continuously broadcasting movies over the residence hall lounge televisions. "I think that it would be a great dorm bonding' experience," said Tim Cashin, student activities coordinator. The movies will eventually be accompanied by commercials. Many schools, such as U.W. Eau Claire have movies wired to each of the rooms, an initiative SAC hopes to work toward in the future. |
