Advertising Policy
Friday, November 10, 2000 The Manitou Messenger is a college newspaper, giving students exposure to journalistic activities and the opportunity to take part. The publication procedures are a learning process for all involved. The printing of the advertisement entitled "Proof of gas chambers?" in the November 10 issue was an unintentional oversight by the executive editors. We received the advertisement from the committee for Open Debate on the Holocaust, an organization located in San Diego, California. The message it conveys is not representative of the views of the staff or of the Messenger in general. We accept full responsibility for the printing of the advertisement and its repercussions. As a self-sufficient publication, we rely upon advertising revenue to publish each week. In the past, because of this dependency, our goal has been to generate as much revenue as possible. However, given the extreme circumstances of the present situation, we are currently re-evaluating our advertising process. The November 10 issue of the Messenger will contain our revised advertising policy. We are also forming an ethics manual to be used by the current staff and passed on to future staffs. We welcome input from the St. Olaf community on this endeavor. While the unfortunate printing of the advertisement is irreversible, we see the opportunity for discussion concerning the events of the Holocaust. We hope that this oversight can be transformed into a positive source of debate. In an effort to continue the education concerning the Holocaust, the proceeds from the advertisement in question will be donated to the Anne Frank Educational Trust. For any further information, please feel free to contact us. |
