9:30 - 10:00am Registration
10:00 - 11:00am Workshop 1: Sound Lighting Choices
Simple ideas for enhancing the lighting of concert performances
Jeff Bartlett, Lighting Designer and Artistic Director, Southern Theater
In this workshop, we'll learn to pay
attention to the lighting, and we'll learn about some
simple ways that we might make better-informed choices about the lighting for
our concerts.
Essentially non-technical in nature, this workshop is designed to give the
musical performer
some basic knowledge that will be useful in working with lighting
professionals, to achieve
the best lighting possible under a wide range of circumstances.
11:15am - 12:15pm Workshop 2:
Commissioning Music
How to get started
Heather Hitchens, President, Meet the Composer
Mark Trevino, Senior Program Manager, Meet the Composer
John Nuechterlein, President, American Composers Forum
Heather Barringer, percussionist and Co-Artistic Director, Zeitgeist ensemble
Randall Davidson, composer
Moderated by
Mary Ellen Childs, composer
This workshop will focus on practical
information about commissioning music, whether
you are a composer interested in receiving commissions or a musician
interested in
commissioning new music. We’ll discuss ways to find a compatible composer or
ensemble,
how to make agreements (i.e. contract issues), fee guidelines, sources for
commissioning funds
(grants, donors, and other creative ideas). Bring your questions about how to
get started down
this exciting road of collaboration between composer, ensemble and
commissioning source.
12:15 - 1:30pm Lunch break
On your own or join the folks from Meet The Composer, the American Composers
Forum
and Zeitgeist for lunch at a nearby restaurant (not included in the workshop
fee). A great
chance to meet and speak informally with workshop participants and presenters.
1:45 - 2:45pm Workshop 3:
Creative Thinking, Creative Process, Creative Practices
Mary Ellen Childs, Composer-in-Residence, Meet The Composer New Residency
Program
Artists, composers and musicians are
creative, but so is every human on the planet.
Creativity is a universal quality that can be valued and developed. In this
hands-on
workshop we’ll look at how can you identify your unique creative habits and
tendencies
and foster them, both in your work as a composer or musician and in other
areas of your life.
3:00 - 4:00pm Workshop 4:
Composers' Listening Session
Composers (this means you!) are invited to bring 3-4 minute works or
excerpts to play (on CD please). Peter Hamlin, who teaches composition, theory
and electronic music at St. Olaf College, will moderate a discussion about the
works.
