Procedure
to become a recognized student organization:
1. New
organizations may initiate the recognition process at any
time during the academic year. Recognition packets are available
at the Student Activities Office.
2. An organization must be comprised of at least four St.
Olaf students, comply with St. Olaf College policies and procedures,
and benefit some important aspect of the St. Olaf community
in order to be considered for recognition. They must also
present the following material to the SOC:
- Copy
of organization constitution and/or by-laws and/or statement
of purpose
- Up-to-date
list of officers or facilitator(s) and members each year
- Names
of national or state affiliation. if applicable
- Statement
of agreement to abide by College and Student Senate policies.
which exists on the petition form
- Willingness
to meet with Student Organization Coordinator or his/her
representative from the SOC upon request
- Brief
listing of planned events for the year
- Name/title
of a faculty/staff advisor
- Organization
financial report, if requested
A student
organization shall not be recognized by the SOC until the
recognition process has been completed. Recognized student
organizations shall go through the entire recognition process
every third school year. At the beginning of the other years,
organization leaders are required to submit an updated list
of officers and members to the Student Organizations Committee
Any changes in the constitution shall also be submitted at
that time Student organizations may appeal to the Senate any
decision made by SOC.

All applicants are asked to categorize their organization
Categorization is entirely for facilitating communication
and includes the following:
- Academic
- Campus
Awareness
- Multi-cultural
Organizations
- Political
Organizations
- Athletic
Clubs
- Religious
Organizations
- Service
Organizations
Benefits
and Services for Recognized Organizations
Each recognized organization has the opportunity to:
- Request
monies from the Student Organizations Committee
- Use
the Student Organization Resource Center (SORC) and the
resources available within (sign making, master calendar
dates, computer connected to the St. Olaf Server, etc.).
- Use
college facilities (meeting rooms, media services, print
shop, etc).
- Attend
Student Activities Office sponsored programs (leadership
workshops, Co-Curricular Extravaganza participation. publications.
etc.).
- Use
the college name in conjunction with programs.
- Engage
in fund raising for organization.
- Be
represented on Student Senate by the Student Organizations
Coordinator.
- List
organization's name in college publications.
- Sponsor
events for St. Olaf student body.
- Request
SGA co-sponsorship funds
- Hold
a college checkbook account, bookstore charge and receive
financial advice
- Receive
assistance from college departments (academic, information
services, food service, etc).
- Hold
a cafeteria fast for their organization (applications found
in the Student Activities Office or the SORC).
Responsibilities
of Recognized Student Organizations
Recognized organizations will be held accountable for the
following responsibilities
- Organizations
will not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color,
national origin, gender, sexual preference or handicap.
- Organizations
will not engage in activities that are illegal or against
St. Olaf College policy.
- Organizations
will develop a clear definition of their goals and ideals
- Organizations
will provide opportunities for personal growth through leadership
positions and group programs.
- Organizations
will provide activities which shall be open to the entire
St. Olaf community
- Organizations
will promote St. Olaf College through positive representation
on and off campus
- Organizations
will work to benefit St. Olaf students. Organizations shall
meet with the Student Organizations Coordinator no less
than once each semester
