St. Olaf welcomes John Gorder '67 and Peder Jothen '94 to the Pastors' Office staff for the remainder of the 2011-12 academic year.  They join Pastor Koenig, John Ferguson and Administrative Assistant Lisa Brown in continuing the work of that office: leading chapel, preaching and leading Sunday morning and Wednesday evening worship, leading bible study, holding office hours, visiting with students/faculty/staff and working with various offices of the college to arrange and carry out events.

Pastor Gorder and his wife, Gordeen '67served as ELCA missionaries in Papua New Guinea, Central African Republic, and Nigeria for twenty-three years before returning to St. Olaf as visiting scholars (1987-88).  In 1993, John began his role here as Director of Church Relations while Gordeen served as International Student Advisor (1993-1999).  From 1999-2011 John was senior pastor at Augustana Lutheran Church of Hyde Park on the campus of the University of Chicago and Gordeen was senior editor at McGraw-Hill Publishing. They are now retired and living in Northfield.

Dr. Peder Jothen ’94 teaches in the Religion Department. He received his degrees from the University of Chicago. Prior to graduate school, he taught English abroad, volunteered for a year in the Lutheran Volunteer Corps and worked for a non-profit in the Twin Cities. His wife, Kaethe Schwehn, is a writer and teacher. They spend a good chunk of each day delightfully chasing their 2 year old, Thisbe.
