History of Viking Yearbook

The Viking Yearbook is run and produced entirely by St. Olaf College students. Located in Northfield, Minnesota (45 miles South of the Twin Cities), the Viking's purpose is to provide high quality, professional coverage of St. Olaf students and preserve their memories through photographic journalism. As times and the student body have changed, so has the Viking. What started as a small 100-page paperback in 1903, has grown into the current hard-cover and 200-page yearbook which includes 48 pages of full-color. The book is distributed in the fall of the following year.

The first Viking was published in 1903. The initial years were difficult, and consequently, a yearbook was not produced every year. The 1983 Viking staff incorrectly published the 1983 book as volume 80 instead of volume 67. Rather than perpetuate this problem, the volume number of the 1998 and all subsequent Viking Yearbooks was removed from the spine.
