My yard: Great outdoor activities |

Golf is a sport I have never wanted to play, even though I used to spend my summers mowing fairways and greens at the Cedars Golf Course during my college years. But last summer, my tennis buddies got me interested in learning to play. Of course, our most memorable golf outing was the time we found a box turtle crawling around near the second green and took turns carrying "Tommy" for the rest of the round so that we could bring him home to the kids for a pet.
My other reason for wanting to learn to play golf is that my husband has said that if I beat him in 18 holes, I get to buy a new car of my choice. This could be my only chance to get a new car, since he has become a self-taught Volkswagen and Volvo mechanic and saved us large amounts of money on our cars. I don't even mind so much now that our good car is only 9 years old. But the first five years I lived in Minnesota after we were married, we had either Volkswagens or Volvos that were at least 12-15 years old. None of them had heat of course, and I thought everyone drove with one hand on the wheel and with the other hand scraping the inside of the windshield.

Tennis is one of my favorite games. Most of my family plays tennis, and I learned to play on the outdoor courts in my hometown. I played on the high school tennis team, and we enjoyed beating the kids from the city schools who had private lessons every summer and arrived in our rural town sporting different tennis dresses for each match and carrying at least three racquets. We were obviously not very polished players, but we were in shape, could keep the ball in play, and eventually wore down the opposing players.
I played a few times a year in the 10 years after college, but started to play regularly again when we moved to St. Peter in 1994. St. Peter has a beautiful indoor tennis facilty, the Swanson Tennis Center, where I've played in the mixed doubles league and enjoyed taking the tennis lessons which we used to make fun of in our youth. I have some great tennis friends -- hi Tami and Joyce -- and an excellent tennis instructor -- hi Dan!
I haven't been running much the last few years, but hope to get going again soon.
Basketball is my favorite sport and the one I have played the most myself, participating in both high school and college basketball.
