Research and Materials Development

With interests in pedagogy, second language acquisition, technology in education, online learning, and instructional design, I have been active in developing materials for Norwegian language learners for most of my teaching career. For the past few years, I have been working on an Introductory Norwegian textbook, Sett i gang, with Kari Lie, a colleague from the University of Texas. Sett i gang I (textbook, workbook), Sett i gang II (textbook, workbork) and Sett i gang I & II Glossary (Norwegian-English, English-Norwegian) are now available for purchase from Lulu.com, an online publisher. The audio for the textbook and workbook is available at the website of our small business, NorWords.

In addition to the textbook project, I have been exploring the use of blogs and online materials in language instruction and in higher education. Below is a list of some of the online projects I have done.

Study Travel

Steve Soderlind and I led a 12-day study tour to Norway in August of 2007. Named "Jotunheimen: From Myth to Modern Norway," this tour started in Oslo, took a loop north through Lillehammer, Lom, Geiranger, and Skei, and ended in Bergen. On the tour, we will explored Norwegian identity through key historical events, myths, folklore, art, literature, modern politics and social economics. We also examine the changes in Norwegian society and cultural identity caused by globalization and immigration.
