The Fifteenth Spring Mini-Conference in Real Analysis
The Fifteenth Spring Mini-Conference in Real Analysis will be held at California State University, San Bernardino, CA 92407, Friday and Saturday, March 22-23, 2002. This is a continuation of the mini-conference series that has been so ably organized by Jack Brown since 1984, and the second held away from Auburn.
There will be three principal speakers at the conference: Clifford Weil, Daniel Mauldin and Steve Jackson. They will each give one-hour presentations. The titles will be announced later. The meeting will begin with coffee and registration at 8:30 AM Friday.
Cliff Weil is the senior editor and one of the founders of the Real Analysis Exchange. He's current research interest includes properties of generalized derivatives and spaces of derivatives, and omega limit sets of continuous self-maps of the unit interval. His work and enthusiasm have inspired many mathematicians to work in the field of Real Analysis.
Dan Mauldin is a Regents professor at North Texas. The recent winner of the coveted "Andy" award, he serves as an editor for Advances in Mathematics and also the Real Analysis Exchange. He is well known for organizing and editing the publication of the famous "Scottish Book". Dan has published well over 100 papers on a wide variety of mathematical topics, including set theory, probability, measure theory, dynamical systems, ergodic theory, real analysis, and topology.
Steve Jackson is a recognized expert in the field of Logic and Descriptive Set Theory, winning of one of the prestigious "Victoria Delfino" prizes. He specializes in the consequences of various forms of the Axiom of Determinacy. Dan Mauldin and Steve Jackson have formed a productive collaboration, bringing together techniques from various areas of mathematics to solve several very old problems. Just recently, they found a solution to a long-standing problem of Hugo Steinhaus on lattices.
In addition to the hour talks given by the invited principal speakers, we will have sessions for contributed 20-minute talks from 9 to 5 both days. If you would like to be included on the schedule as a speaker, please contact one of the organizers listed below.
The limited funds provided by the NSF Grant will not enable us to pay the travel costs of the faculty participants (except for the principal speakers) but we will likely pay for the local (shared) motel room costs for the first fifty people who register. We will have some funds set aside which can provide limited travel support for students who wish to attend. We will also provide transportation to and from Ontario airport. Try to target arrival times for approximately 7:00 PM (PST) on Thursday. Some meals will be provided, including coffee, fruit, and doughnuts before morning sessions and the traditional picnic on Friday.
