The next boats are nearing completion as of April 2, 2007. Both are Northwestern Greenland or Thule
design craft.
The first boat (mine) is a copy of USNM 160388, figure 205 in Adney and Chapelle (upper plan,
below). It
has a relatively flat bottom and three-piece ribs. I've made a few minor
changes from the original but the dimensions are the same. Briefly, the changes are that I altered the
coaming design from the six-part (shown below) to a four-part as shown in
photographs in Peterson's book. and I also bent the back of the coaming to
conform with my back. The frame is similar though I made the chine
stringers a little heavier than in the original and put more rake in the coaming
(taller masik) to get a drier ride. The
original plan and photos of my completed frame are below. I still need
to get a few more coats of varnish on the skin and install deck lines.
The second boat is also from Adney and Chapelle; it is figure 199. I am
building this with my son and we are shortening it to 14' and reducing the depth
to sheer for him. We are keeping the beam the same. (See
the plan at the bottom of the page.) The frame is now (4/2/07)
complete and we need to skin it.
