Guidelines for Portfolios

The purpose of the portfolio is to provide evidence that you have made a conscious effort to consider a mathematics course in which you are (were) enrolled as a student from the viewpoint of mathematics education.

What are the pedagogical techniques used? What learning styles are best suited to the teaching style? What is the balance between concept development and skill development? How do the assessment instruments match the class' concept/skill balance? What choices have been made with regard to examples, review, motivation, applications, technology, assignments, student participation, topic sequence, etc. From what levels of Bloom's Taxonomy are the questions asked in class and on tests? Who participates most in class?

From a personal point of view, you might consider such questions as; How do the choices made by the instructor affect my learning -- what makes things easy or hard for me? What changes might I make if I were the instructor? Am I a "typical" member of the class? Are there study groups that meet outside of class? How effective are they for me? …for others?

This portfolio should contain journal-type entries reflecting on the class, and "artifacts" (e.g. tests, notes, & assignments you are analyzing; questions, examples & problems that you might use in place of the ones used in the class) that support your observations, ideas, analyses and evaluations of the class and your learning.

Portfolios are due on May 15 at 8:00 a.m. (the last day of class)
