Lin 7:2 Ammianus Marcellinus

Imagine you are one of the Huns Ammianus describes in this account.  How might you describe yourself, and your encounter with the Romans?  Use Amminaus’ description as a basis for your counter-description.

Lin 7:6 Salvian of Marseilles

In this selection, the “Africans” are the Romans who have colonized and governed North Africa.  What vices in particular does Salvian find abhorrent?  How does he use the barbarians as a means of chastising them?  Finally, what in your opinion is the real story of the encounter between the barbarians and the Africans?

Corpus iuris civilis

Why is the emperor revising the law codes in this way?  What language does he use to describe the Roman approach to law?  Can you discern, on the basis of this document, how Roman law might have become central to the development of legal theory in the west?
