Hesiod Works and Days
I’d like you to consider all of the following questions in
writing your paper:
·
Begin by briefly
describing the source. Don’t take more
than a paragraph to do this.
·
What are the features
of humans at each stage of history? In
particular, what distinguishes each group from the one that preceded it?
·
What moral judgments
are reflected in Hesiod’s story of devolution? Use this question as an
opportunity to tie your material together.
Homer Iliad, Book I
Consider either of the following questions:
1.
What is the basis for
the quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles?
While it may seem to you that they are acting like children, look
carefully at the way the two express their positions in their own terms.
2.
Reflect on the
position of the women involved in this incident. Look carefully at all the evidence—that is, all the points in the
text where men describe what the women mean to them. What does this incident reveal about the vulnerabilities of women
in wartime?
