I really should have assigned you your paper on the Christian ruler after having read this chapter, but things did'nt quite work out that way! The textbook reading for today describes the foundations for long-lasting political entities, such as the Holy Roman Empire in the east and the Capetian Dynasty in the west. These terms and questions may seem to be a long list, yet they all are important components of what would be a new world order that would prevail for centuries.
- Vladimir
- Basil II
- Seljuk Turks
- Duke William of Normandy
- Cnut
- Harold Godwine
- How was Italy's political development different from those regions characterized by feudalism?
- Otto I (the Great; pictured at right)
- Matilda
- Hrosvita
- What was the outcome of the decline in Carolingian power in the eastern part of Charlemagne's empire? What about in the west?
- Hugh Capet
- Cluny

Homework Questions:
- The papacy hit a low point under John XII, described here. How does the story of his relationship with Otto resemble that of Leo III and Charlemagne? How does it (obviously!) differ?
- What role did Otto take in remedying the situation in Rome? What does this suggest about the emperor's role in relation to the church?
- What were the difficulties in deposing John? How were they overcome?
- How was a new pope chosen?
