History 211: Second Paper
Length: four pages, double-spaced

Please use internal citations (author's last name, page #) in identifying sources according to the following format: "Good men, truly, are in every respect useful to everyone" (Erasmus, 89-90). I would like to see all of you draw on the texts in your work, with material directly cited from the sources. Make sure that you do this with the primary sources in particular, where relevant! You have two topics from which to choose:

  1. In Chapter 20 of The Inheritance of Rome (“Outer Europe), Wickham describes a number of societies from outside the boundaries of the three we have been focusing on (the successors to the Carolingian Empire, the Islamic world, and Byzantium).  First, explain what Wickham believes these societies have in common.  Next, describe the developments in three of them, including in your discussion reference to at least one of the primary sources from Rosenwein’s Reading the Middle Ages.
  1. Who or what were the Slavs? The Vikings? Scandinavians? The Rus? To what extent does any of these terms reflect a tangible political and/or social entity?  Basing your discussion on Wickham’s 20th chapter, explore the meanings of each term, and the changes over time in the identities of the groups included under each one.
