Instructions: This paper should be about 1000 words in length, double-spaced, with 1" margins and numbered pages. Please use internal citations (name of source in Geary, page #) in identifying sources according to the following format: "This bishop came to the king, and voluntarily undertook to evangelize the country " (Bede, 89-90). I would like to see all of you draw on the texts in your work, with material directly cited from the sources.
Topic: What did it mean to be a Christian king in the Early Middle Ages? Draw on the examples of Clovis, Charlemagne, and Alfred as you discuss the ways in which kings understood their role as both protectors of the church and rulers of their people. You need not give equal time to each, but you do need to take into account what evidence you can find of the kings' relations with important men of the church, their religious convictions, and their roles as warriors.
