Here we have the Three Graces from Botticelli's Primavera; the Grace on the right is identified as Caterina Sforza, an illegitimate daughter of the infamous Galeazzo Maria. He may have been a hound, but at least he produced a lovely daughter.

The reading for today gives us more detail about recriminations against the Pazzi, and about the long-term outcome.

Presenter and Homework Questions (for homework, choose one):

  1. In what ways did Lorenzo function like an anointed king? In what ways did he not? What kinds of measures was he trying to take to create a kingship, or its equivalent, for himself and his heirs? How were these measures supposed to assure this outcome?
  2. Our author believes that the Pazzi conspiracy and its failure were the key, galvanizing feature of Lorenzo’s time that enabled him to consolidate his position.  Why does Martines take this position? Looking at the evidence, do you agree that this is the case?  What might the outcome have been for Florence if no such conspiracy had occurred? If this one had succeeded in murdering Lorenzo as well as his brother?
