Topic for First Paper

The first paper, due Monday, September 24 at class time, is an opportunity for you to pull together what you have learned so far, and for me to see how things are going. The papers should be about 1000 words in length, double-spaced, with 1" margins. Please use internal citations (author's last name, page #) in identifying sources according to the following format: "Good men, truly, are in every respect useful to everyone" (Erasmus, 89-90). I would like to see all of you draw on the texts in your work, with material directly cited from the sources.

Topic:

Write an essay in which you explore the character of late medieval spirituality, using the sources we have read so far. Include in your discussion references to mysticism, aspects of religious practice (pilgrimages, relics, etc.), and the institutional church in its relationship with ordinary people. Be critical in your use of the sources; that is, be aware of the individual's perspective (for example, Erasmus is a humanist writer who is highly critical of certain practices of his contemporaries). You should also be clear in your mind about the distinction between primary and secondary sources, and not rely too heavily on the latter. Consider your own evaluation of the subject: do you see positive things in the religious life of the period, or are you more inclined to be critical?
