As I announced in class, we're going to have a debate--or a trial, with half the class arguing in favor of executing the Drummer of Niklashausen, and the other half arguing in favor of sparing him. Here are some things to consider:
- Put yourself in the place of the people of that time, as well as you are able. Use the documents cited from authorities to get a sense of their perspective, and what evidence exists of Hans's sermons and the people's response to understand his supporters.
- Note the competing titles for Hans Behem: the Drummer vs. the Holy Youth.
- Note the beliefs that both sides have in common.
- The question people need to resolve is whether Hans was in fact divinely inspired. How would people at that time have determined this?
- Even though you are playacting, you should use your own logic and imaginations to derive your arguments one way or the other. Flesh out your position as much as you can.
I will arrange the room so that the two sides are facing each other, and call on people to make contributions. I hope that we can have fun with this exercise!
