For over a decade, Dr. Leland Johnson (Augustana College) has lead
summer workshops to help train College and University professors
and instructors in the care and handling of a variety of plant and
animal embryos for use in the teaching of Developmental Biology.
These workshops have proven invaluable especially for professors
just starting their teaching careers, or for faculty who wish to
expand their familiarity of model teaching organisms. For seven
of these seasons, I've assisted Leland by offering half-day workshops
introducing fluorescence microscopy applications for the teaching
laboratory. Typically workshops are held in June at the Darling
Marine Center just outside of Damariscotta, Maine. The setting is
beautiful, the learning experience is fast-paced and exciting, and
the lobster dinner at the end of the week is a welcome and much
anticipated reward.
