An exploration of a unique, inland marine refuge
on San Salvador Island.
We intend to characterize the diversity of organisms that have
taken refuge in Merman Pond by virtue of its unique underwater
cavern system that connects it to the sea. This will be done by
snorkeling and superficial SCUBA observations (during periods
of incoming tide). We have determined that exploration of the
cave entrance is not dangerous, provided one restrict ones activities
to the first two (large/ open) chambers. We also hope to characterize
the most basic features of this cave and its pond, namely tidal
lag, tidal volume, outlet (explore neighboring Pidgeon Creek by
snorkel for a possible egress to the cave).
