Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Services

Interlibrary Loan Services are available to St. Olaf College students, faculty and staff to request materials not available at St. Olaf or Carleton College. Please check the Bridge first to see if your item is available from St. Olaf or Carleton College libraries.  If the Bridge shows that the item is checked out, you may place a hold on the item in Bridge and it will be recalled for you. However, if we do not own it or if it is missing or otherwise unavailable from our libraries, it may be ordered from ILL.   Other items that cannot be ordered through Interlibrary Loan include currently used textbooks and media items such as CDs.  Please contact us if you have further questions about what materials you may request.

Submitting Requests

Login to ILLiad to submit and check on Interlibrary Loan requests. If you are using ILLiad for the first time, you will be asked to provide some basic information to activate your account. Please fill out your citations as completely as possible when requesting books, articles or other items.  Incomplete citations may slow down the processing of your request.

Turnaround/Delivery Time

Requested materials can take from 2 days to 4 weeks.  The average turnaround is 4 days for electronic journal articles and 8 days for books, depending on where the lending library is located and delivery time via US Mail.  You will receive e-mail notification when your item is ready for access online or pickup.  Materials are picked up and returned at the Rolvaag Circulation desk.  All paperwork, including the loan book strap, must remain with your items and must also be returned.

Loan Periods, Lending Fees and Overdue/Loss/Damage Charges

The loan period is determined by the lending library.  The average loan period is 3-4 weeks for books.  Renewals are usually possible, but they are short-term loans.  Overdue books are not renewable.  Submit renewal requests through your ILL account by selecting the item and clicking on "renew" in the upper left-hand corner.  All materials borrowed via Interlibrary Loan are subject to recall by the lender at any time.

Currently, St. Olaf College library subsidizes the cost of Interlibrary Loan, including copyright and postage fees.  On occasion, the lending library imposes a borrowing fee, usually between $10 and $25.  We will inform you prior to ordering if a cost will be associated with your request, and you will have the opportunity to decline, or to agree and specify your maximum cost.  You will not be billed until after you have received your item.

You are responsible for any loss or damage fees.  Late return, lost or damaged materials jeopardizes the ability of the library to borrow from other libraries in the future.
