Our process began by forming an organomagnesium compound.  This was then joined to an aldehyde.  The resulting alcohol is then transformed into an alkyl halide using PBr₃.  In the next step we removed a proton from a ethyl group, and used alkylation to attach it to the sp carbon.  In the final step we hydrogenated the double bond using hydrogen and a Pt/C catalyst.
