Jury Research
You have been hired as a consultant to a research
project on the effect of different sizes of juries in the justice
system. A local court system has agreed to randomly assign their
cases needing jury trial to juries of either 6 or 12 people. You will
be given access to the juries, their deliberations, and all court
documents. You job is to design a study that allows you to
investigate whether 6 or 12 person juries are more efficient and
just.
- What ethical concerns do you have about this
research?
- What is the IV in this study?
- Design 4 DVs one at each level of measurement
(nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio). Make one of these an
unobtrusive measure.
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of
each measure?
- What are the sources of error and bias in each
measure?
- How would you analyze each
measure?
- How would you look for interrelationships
among the DVs?
