Homework -- Assignments are to be worked out in detail
and final drafts
put in a Class Folder. The assigned problems are not merely exercises,
but require much more thinking and explanation/proof.
Working together to solve the problems is encouraged big time!!,
but you must write up your own solutions.
Definitions -- I'd like you to keep a complete, dictionary
(ie. an alphabetized list) of the definitions we learn in the course.
This is to be word processed and updated weekly. For an intro to the
mathematics wordprocessing program called LaTeX, click
this
Theorems -- I'd like you to keep a
list of the {\bf important} theorems (facts) of the course.
Midterms - 100 pts.- There will be 1 midterm exam
worth 100pts coming at the end of the text material (about the 10 week mark). This
will be a definitions/theorems exam over the basic theory.
During the final month or so of the course, I'll ask that you write a paper on a
topic such as these. This will be a group effort
with about 3 people per group.
Final - 100 pts.- At The Final, celebrated on Monday,
December 17 from 9:00 to 11:00 will be reserved for oral presentations
of the papers. Think Power Point or Beamer.
I suggest making
for your definitions and theorem statements. Put the word to be defined (or
theorem statement) on the front and the definition (or proof outline)
on the back. I know this sounds crazy, but these are the basics and if you know
the basics you'll be in good shape.
Get into a Real Study Group and make sure a real smart person is
in that group with you. Working on these ideas together is fun and helps make
your study time more useful.
See Humke regularly. Hey, he can help, he gets
paid huge bucks to help you,
and he gets lonely sitting in his office all by himself. Help the poor guy out and
get a few Real Real tips while your at it. What could be better!!
Real Real is a course about ideas, and mastering the ideas of week 3
depends on your having mastered the ideas of week 2. Real Real can overwhelm you
if you don't keep on top of things. If you do get behind, Humke can help.
