Dimensional Analysis - Problem Solving
Chemistry 121 - 10 September 2003

In class we discussed some guidelines used to solve problems in chemistry.  I demonstrated finding the solution to the first problem listed below.  The remaining problems are for your own practice either individually or for working in groups.  They will not be handed in – so use them as a study aid.  Check my (and your classmates') answers to these.

3.10 x 102 tons of aluminum can tabs have been recycled over the past decade to support the Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities. If 1 tab has a mass of 0.3572 g, how many tabs have been recycled? 1 ton = 2000 lbs.; 1 kg = 2.205 lbs

Answer = 7.87 x 108 tabs recycled

Ole collected 3.47 pounds of can tabs. How much are these worth if the price per ton (high grade Al) is $1431.69? 1 ton = 2000 lbs

Answer = $2.48

The Ronald McDonald House raises an average of $40,000.00/yr from recycled can tabs. How many people collect can tabs if each person collects 4.0 lbs per year? 1 ton = 2000 lbs; 1 ton = $1431.69

Answer = 1.4 x 104 people

Aluminum has a density of 2.69 g/cm3. What is the minimum size cubic container needed to hold 1.70 pounds of aluminum (express the answer by stating the length of one side of the box in cm)?

Answer = 6.59 cm

in inches?

Answer = 2.59 in
