Read the essay, "Cubes, Eights, and Dots" by Robert Kooser and Lance Factor which will be on closed reserve in the Science Library. Write a 2-4 page paper based on reflections about this essay. You may wish to consider some of the questions below:

Questions and Instructions:

• Is science an accumulation of facts or the process of accumulating these facts? Are these "facts" really facts? How important is it to learn some of the history behind the facts that you study?
• What is the role of dualism in science? Where have you run into dualism in your study of science?
• Bohr presented his planetary model of the atom in 1913. Why do you think Lewis and Langmuir seemed to ignore this work?
• Did Lewis' theory follow observation or was the theory developed and then tested by observation?
• Should personality play a role in science? Is it avoidable? Did Lewis have a right to be irritated with Langmuir?
• Suppose that Lewis was never born, or that Bohr became a butcher. Would chemistry eventually have come to the same rules and theories without them?
• Do most students concern themselves with Science I or Science II? What would be the best way to learn science?
• Specifications for the paper: Computer word processor, margins = 1 inch, font size = 12 pt., line spacing = 2.
