Overview
Numerous analytical methods, currently
practiced by chromatographers everywhere, begin as publications in the
primary literature. Thus, knowledge of the primary literature constitutes
a key component in the professional arsenal of any chemical analyst.
Upper management is looking to expand the separations related capabilities
at Norway Valley Laboratories and desires critical feedback from each company
regarding recent advances published in the literature. Your company, designated
as specialists in separation science, has been asked to develop an EndNote
database on a specific literature topic and review a current paper of your
choice from within that literature database.
| Company | Day | Topic |
| Wendy | Tue | Drugs / pharmaceuticals in the environment |
| Laura | Tue | Embedded polar groups in chromatographic stationary phases |
| Bruce | Tue | Lab-on-a-chip technology / microfluidic devices |
| Deano | Tue | Monolithic chromatography column media |
| Wendy | Wed | Residual silanols in chromatographic stationary phases |
| Laura | Wed | Solid phase microextraction (SPME) - a sampling technique in environmental analysis |
| Bruce | Wed | Environmental analysis of polar contaminants by LiquidChromatography-Mass Spectrometry |
| Deano | Wed | Liquid chromatography with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance detection (LC-NMR) |
Assignment
Use SciFinder Scholar, Web of Science,
or any other suitable on-line searchable database to collect citations
(book, journal, reviews, etc.) related to your assigned research topic
that have been published from 1998 to the present. Collect these
citations and import them into an EndNote database. Once the citations
are in the database, look for a journal article that your company wishes
to review. Keep in mind that you can access a number of journals
electronically and download/print copies for you to use; alternatively,
you can explore paper copies of journals that the library receives.
Companies will submit the paper review as a MS Word document based on the template available (click here for template download). The template contains a series of questions that the company should address in its review about the specific paper. A hardcopy or electronic submission of the paper review is acceptable. The companies will submit the EndNote database in electronic form. Simply drag it to my folder on the server, Sven, or attach it to an email.
Company role responsibilities:
Manager will be responsible
for the written product and/or documentation of the group effort.
This includes handing in the material on time, in a form that satisfies
the grade expectations of all in the company.
Chemist will acquire all formulas and data required to perform any calculations. When calculations are unnecessary, Chemist will be responsible for gathering all specific information, including library references and book selections.
Software and/or Hardware
will be responsible for locating, launching, operating, and closing any
program that Manager needs to use to process Chemistís data to reach the
objectives. She or he also will be responsible for locating and starting
any computer needed, conducting the searches via various software platforms,
and for operating any printer Manager needs to output material to submit.
Hardware and Software may wish to explore how to output the contents of
the EndNote database in a printed form in the format used by the journal
Analytical
Chemistry.
