SciFinder Scholar 2001

SciFinder Scholar is a wonderful research tool for searching the chemical related scientific literature.  The search engine and citations database are produced and maintained by the American Chemical Society - Chemical Abstracts Service.  It is extremely powerful, professionally relevant, and can be set up on any PC or Macintosh on campus.  It is set up on all of the computers in Sc353, Manager's workstation in Sc 321, and the portable computers.  To use SciFinder Scholar 2001, simply find it in the "programs" section of the start menu (PCs) or desktop short-cut (Macs), start it, and request to do a search.

When the results are returned (which takes generally longer than you might like--be patient), look down the list of titles for the icon that looks like a computer monitor.  Click on that icon to go to the on-line version of the article. Please note:  some articles may note be free; do not ask to have an article sent for a charge.  St. Olaf subscribes or has consortia agreements to get a number of electronic publications; seek assistance of the instructor or science librarian if you have questions.  Articles without that icon may still be available in the Science Library. We have quite a good set of journals there. For best results, select the PDF version of the article, not the HTML version, if it is available.

At this point in time you can either select the results that you wish to save be clicking on the boxes to the left of the citation or you can refine the references further by clicking on the button on the lower left part of the panel.  If you want to save the files, I would recommend the rich text format (.rtf) if you will not be importing them into a bibliographic database. Use the "TAGGED" file format for importing into EndNote.
