Important Resources for Chemists


SAGE
 The online catalog for St. Olaf College libraries is your source for books on your research topic.  Don't forget to search Carleton's holdings as well.  The two catalogs will be merging in the next year or two.  Click SAGE to go to the catalog or check out the science library web page here.


Web of Science/Web of Knowledge
 In paper this was called the "Science Citation Index."  It is the only source that will allow you to discover who has been "citing" or "quoting" older important papers you may have already discovered.  You can also search topically or by author.  Click WOK to go there.

Science Direct
 A source that has 1,400 scientific journals available in FULL TEXT!  We have access to only 1,200 of these key scientific publications distributed by Elsevier publishing.  Click http://www.sciencedirect.com to go there.

SciFinderScholar
 the definitive database for chemistry publications going back to 1907!  It has built-in full text available.  This program needs to be individually loaded onto your computer's hard drive in order to use it.  You can use any computer in the chemistry department or science library as they all have the program pre-loaded.  Contact Brad Mikkelson at x3570 or mikkelse@stolaf.edu for assistance in installing this program.


ACS Web Editions
 St. Olaf College gets most of the ACS journals online and in full text.  The web site has easy downloads and great graphics.  Go to http://www.pubs.acs.org/


ACS Journal Archives
 takes you back to volume 1, issue 1 of all the ACS publications.  Go to http://www.pubs.acs.org/archives/


JSTOR  
a database of scientific journals related to many topics in biology and general science including chemistry and biochemistry related (i.e., Proceedings of the National Academy of Science and Science).  Click http://www.jstor.org/ to go there and search.

database the covers biological, medical and environmental related journals and topics.  To search CSA, click here.

PubMed a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/) includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

 a free software program that will handle all of your references and will even format your bibliography in a style suitable for ACS journals as well as a host of others!  Version 6 has a new manuscript feature that allows you to submit papers using a particular journal template.  Click here for instructions.
