HISTORY 272 KUTULAS
A true woman was pious, pure, submissive, and domestic. A slave woman was not allowed to be these things. Slave women had to negotiate between who they were allowed to be and who they wanted to be. How much of the true woman ideal did they pursue and how much did they reject in their quests to find dignity and strength in the extremely limited role white society allowed them?
Please answer this in a 5 to 6 page paper, double-spaced, with regular margins. Your source should be Deborah Gray White’s book. You should not need or use outside materials. This should be your own work. Plagiarism includes not only materials copied out of books or the Web or other sources, but also that which has been paraphrased out of White. Quote as necessary, but be sure you identify your quotations as such. Late papers will be marked down. I will not accept papers turned in after the graded assignment has been returned to the class. I will also not accept papers sent to me as electronic attachments or handed to me on disk.
The purpose of this assignment is twofold: (1) to make sure you have read the book and understand it well enough to construct an argument using it and (2) to see that you are able to construct a coherent, structured, well-presented argument. Outstanding papers will also be well written and well presented.
DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13TH
