Chapter 12 -- Discussion Questions dealing with RETIREMENT YEARS
Michael R. Leming, Ph.D.
Professor of Sociology
Spring Semester 1997
- Distinguish between social disengagement and societal disengagement.
- Discuss in class "social disengagement" and "societal disengagement." Ask the students to recall any experiences or situations where these two concepts apply. How did the individuals involved react to their disengagement?
- Robert Butler and Robert Atchley disagree with disengagement theory. They suggest that no evidence exists to support the theory that separation of the aged from society is a natural part of the aging process. Discuss in class the pros and cons of disengagement theory.
- Distinguish between substitution and accommodation explanations of adjustment to retirement.
- Discuss the financial situation in retirement for most older Americans. What does the research evidence show about life satisfaction for the elderly?
- Cite three reasons for the strong disapproval of sexual activity in older men and women in our society.
- Why does being old inevitably lead to poor social evaluation in American society. Briefly describe day-care geriatric centers in the United States, why are they necessary.
